Mashujaa Day, Heroes’ Day – (Mashujaa in Swahili is the name for Hero) Mashujaa Day is a national holiday in Kenya that is observed on October 20th as a public holiday to collectively honor all those who have contributed to the struggle for independence in Kenya or helped in the post-independence Kenya.

Before the promulgation in 2010 of the Constitution, it was called Kenyatta Day. It was celebrated to remember the Kapenguria detention of freedom fighters Achieng’Oneko, Bildad Kangia, Fred Kubai and Jomo Kenyatta.
